Morning: A Bike Ride Through the Heart of Nature
The sun begins to illuminate the dunes and pine forests surrounding Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez. After breakfast on the campsite terrace, hop on your bike and set off on an adventure! In 20 minutes from your campsite, you'll reach the salt marshes.
The network of cycle paths in the Vendée is ideal for a safe and enjoyable day out. From the campsite, you can follow the Vélodyssée, which winds its way through forests, marshes and quaint little villages. Along the way, take time to admire the local flora and fauna: grey herons, white egrets and other birds come to rest on the ponds lining the route. The sea-scented air and the sweet fragrance of wild everlasting flowers accompany you as you make your way towards the salt marshes.
The Vie salt marshes, situated in Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, not far from Saint Hilaire de Riez, are the most beautiful salt marshes in the Vendée. They stretch for many kilometres, so do go and explore them!
Lunchtime: A break is necessary, Picnic by the Water
Before setting off on your tour of the marshes, what could be better than an al fresco lunch? Take a seat at a shaded picnic area, not far from the salt pans.
On the menu: why not try the local specialities? Head to the market in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez to buy some. Enjoy your meal made up of local produce, such as a lovely crusty baguette, Vendée ham, and mature cheeses. For dessert, a Vendée brioche accompanied by artisanal apple juice completes this typical regional feast.
During this moment of relaxation, let yourself be lulled by the birdsong and the murmur of the wind caressing the reeds.

The Afternoon: A Dive into the World of Salt Marshes
The time has come to step into the fascinating world of the salt workers, those artisans who carry on an age-old tradition. Led by a passionate guide, you’ll discover the history of the salt marshes, their ecological role and the techniques used to extract ‘white gold’ from the ocean.
The stages of the harvest are explained to you in detail: seawater being channelled into the basins, gradual evaporation under the influence of the sun and wind, until the salt crystallises. The highlight of the show? Watching the ‘fleur de sel’ being harvested – those fine crystals that form on the surface and are carefully gathered by hand.
Children (and the more curious visitors) can even get stuck in and have a go at using the ‘long las’, the traditional tool of the salt workers. It’s a fun and enriching experience that gives you an appreciation of all the patience and skill required for this age-old craft.
Before you leave, you’ll be offered a little tasting: a few grains of fleur de sel melt on the tongue, revealing all their subtlety. You can also buy a packet of salt directly from the producer – an authentic souvenir to take home with you.
End of the day: quiet return to the campsite and a relaxing evening
After this lovely afternoon of learning and discovery, it’s time to head back to Kabana Village. The cycle ride home is a gentle one, as we reflect on the memories of a day full of vivid images and exciting experiences.
Back at the campsite, why not make the most of the swimming pool or enjoy a relaxing moment at the bar whilst sipping a cold drink? In the evening, you can chat with other holidaymakers over a convivial barbecue, sharing your thoughts on this wonderful day.
