Les Sables-d’Olonne, between beach and heritage
An iconic town of the Vendée Globe, Les Sables-d’Olonne charms visitors with its long beach of fine sand and its lively seafront. Here, you can alternate between swimming, seaside strolls and cultural visits. The Île Penotte district, with its shell murals, is a must-see for a picturesque stroll through the narrow streets decorated by a local artist.
History buffs will enjoy a visit to the Sainte-Croix Abbey Museum, which houses collections of modern and contemporary art, or the imposing Saint-Nicolas Priory, overlooking the harbour entrance.
Fancy an adventure? Hop into a kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard and explore the Olonne marshes for a chance to immerse yourself in unspoilt nature.
Practical information: Les Sables-d’Olonne can be reached by car (around 45 minutes from Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez) or by train via the SNCF station. The Grande Plage is lifeguarded in summer and has facilities for people with reduced mobility.

2. The Île Penotte Quarter
An open-air museum! This pedestrian district is famous for its facades adorned with mosaics made entirely of seashells by a local artist. A poetic and essential detour.
3. Port Olona
A haven for skippers. It is here that the legendary Vendée Globe sets sail and returns every four years. Here, you can admire some impressive racing yachts and enjoy the harbour’s many restaurants.
Kabana’s tip: Take the «Passeur» (water bus) to the Chaume district, the oldest part of Les Sables.
