A getaway to the Isle of Yeu, a jewel of the Atlantic
Around thirty kilometres offshore, Île d’Yeu is a must-visit destination for a day out in the heart of nature. With its hidden coves, golden sandy beaches and unspoilt landscapes, the island is a true paradise for lovers of walking and cycling. Among the must-see sights are the Vieux-Château, perched on a rocky outcrop; the beaches of Anse des Soux and Belle Maison; and the charming harbour of Port-Joinville, ideal for a gourmet break.
To reach the island, several ferry companies operate crossings from Fromentine (40 minutes from Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez) and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie. The journey takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the port of departure and the ferry company. Once there, hiring a bike is the best way to explore the island at your own pace.
Practical information: Remember to book your crossing in advance, especially in summer. The main operators are Compagnie Vendéenne and Yeu Continent. Once there, several hire companies offer standard and electric bikes for a hassle-free visit.
Noirmoutier, between beaches and salt marshes
Accessible via the legendary Passage du Gois – a road that is submerged at low tide – or via the bridge linking La Barre-de-Monts, Noirmoutier is another unmissable destination near Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez. The island charms visitors with its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Among its treasures are the Plage des Dames, with its iconic white beach huts, and the Plage de l’Anse Rouge, ideal for a swim in picturesque surroundings.
Nature lovers can explore the salt marshes, where you can watch the salt workers harvesting salt, or visit the Müllembourg Nature Reserve for a stroll amongst the dunes and migratory birds. In terms of heritage, Noirmoutier Castle, dating from the 12th century, offers a panoramic view of the island and a museum where you can learn more about its history.
Practical information: To cross the Passage du Gois safely, check the tide times. The island is easy to explore by bike thanks to its many cycle paths. Several bike hire companies offer bikes in the town centre and near the harbour at Noirmoutier-en-l’Île.
